Photoshop Text Tips, Tricks And Keyboard Shortcuts


In this Photoshop tips & tricks tutorial, we're going to look at some handy tricks and keyboard shortcuts for working with Photoshop text. We'll be looking at things like how to quickly select words, lines and paragraphs, how to easily switch between fonts, how to quickly access bold and italic font styles, leading, tracking and kerning, resizing, aligning and justifying text, and more!

Selecting All Text On A Type Layer

Here's some sample text that I borrowed from our tutorial on image pixels:

All of this text is on a single Type layer in the Layers palette. To select all the text on a Type layer, simply double-clickdirectly on the Type layer's thumbnail:



Double-click directly on the Type layer's thumbnail (the "T") to select all text on the layer at once.



  • All the text is now selected:






After double-clicking on the Type layer's thumbnail, all the text on the layer is selected.


  • Selecting A Single Word


To quickly select an entire word in Photoshop, simply double-click directly on the word. Here I've double-clicked on the word "photograph":






Double-click directly on a word to instantly select it.


  • Selecting An Entire Line Of Text


To quickly select an entire line of text, just triple-click anywhere on the line. Here I've triple-clicked on the second line of text from the top:







Triple-click anywhere on a line of text to select the entire line.


  • Selecting An Entire Paragraph


To quickly select an entire paragraph of text, quadruple-click anywhere on 
the paragraph. Here I've quadruple-clicked on the first paragraph to select it:




Quadruple-click anywhere inside a paragraph to select it.


  • Instantly Make Text Bold


If you need to make some text bold, simply highlight the text with your 
mouse and press Ctrl+Shift+B (Win) /Command+Shift+B (Mac):





Highlight the text and press "Ctrl+Shift+B" (Win) / "Command+Shift+B" (Mac)

 to make it bold.


  • Instantly Italicize Text


To instantly italicize text, simply highlight it and then press 
Ctrl+Shift+I (Win) / Command+Shift+I (Mac):







Highlight the text and press "Ctrl+Shift+I" (Win) / "Command+Shift+I" 
(Mac) for italics.


  • Superscript Text


To superscript text, highlight it and then press Ctrl+Shift++ 
(Win) / Command+Shift++ (Mac):







Highlight the text and press "Ctrl+Shift++" (Win) / "Command+Shift++" 
(Mac) to superscript text.



  • Subscript Text


To subscript text, highlight it and then press 
Ctrl+Shift+Alt++ (Win) / Command+Shift+Option++ (Mac):






Highlight the text and press "Ctrl+Shift+Alt++" (Win) / "Command
+Shift+Option++" (Mac) to subscript text.



  • Strike-Thru Text


To strike-thru text, highlight it and then press 
Ctrl+Shift+Alt++ (Win) / Command+Shift+Option++ (Mac):






Highlight the text and press "Ctrl+Shift+/" (Win) / "Command+
Shift+/" (Mac) for strike-thru text.


  • Adjust Baseline Shift


To raise or lower the baseline shift by 2 points, hold down 
Shift+Alt (Win) / Shift+Option (Mac) and use the Up or Down arrow keys on your keyboard:




Hold down "Shift+Alt" (Win) / "Shift+Option" (Mac) and use the Up or Down arrow keys to adjust the baseline shift by 2 points at a time.



To raise or lower the baseline shift by 10 points, hold down 
Ctrl+Shift+Alt (Win) / Command+Shift+Option (Mac)  the 
Up or Down arrow keys:






Hold down "Ctrl+Shift+Alt" (Win) / "Command+Shift+Option" 
(Mac) and use the Up or Down arrow keys to adjust the baseline 
shift by 10 points at a time.


  • Convert Text To All Caps


To quickly convert text into all caps, highlight the text 
and use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+K (Win) /Command+Shift+K (Mac):





Highlight the text and press "Ctrl+Shift+K" (Win) / "Command+Shift+K"
 (Mac) for all caps.


  • Convert Text To Small Caps


To quickly convert text into small caps, highlight the text and 
use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+H (Win) /Command+Shift+H (Mac):





Highlight the text and press "Ctrl+Shift+H" (Win) / "Command+Shift+H" 
(Mac) for all caps.


  • Quickly Resizing Type


To enlarge or reduce the size of your type by 2 points, highlight the text, 
hold down Ctrl+Shift (Win) / Command+Shift(Mac) and press the < or > keys on your keyboard:





Hold down "Ctrl+Shift" (Win) / "Command+Shift" (Mac) and use the "
<" and ">" keys to resize the type by 2 points.

To enlarge or reduce the type size by 10 points, highlight the text, hold 
down Ctrl+Shift+Alt (Win) /Command+Shift+Option (Mac) and press the < or > keys:






Hold down "Ctrl+Shift+Alt" (Win) / "Command+Shift+Option" (
Mac) and use the "<" and ">" keys to resize the type by 10 points.


  • Quickly Adjust Leading (Linespacing)

To quickly adjust the leading (the amount of space between two or
 more lines of text) by 2 points, simply highlight the lines you want to 
adjust, hold down Alt (Win) / Option (Mac) and use the Up or 
Down arrow keys on your keyboard:








Hold down "Alt" (Win) / "Option" (Mac) and use the Up and Down arrow keys to adjust linespacing by 2 points.

To quickly adjust the leading by 10 points, hold down Ctrl+Alt (Win) / Command+Option (Mac) and use the Up and Down arrow keys:





Hold down "Ctrl+Alt" (Win) / "Command+Option" (Mac) and use the Up and Down arrow keys to adjust linespacing by 10 points.


Quickly Adjust Tracking (Space Between Groups Of Letters)


To quickly adjust tracking (the space between groups of letters or entire lines of text) by 20 em, highlight the lines you want to adjust, hold down Alt (Win) / Option (Mac) and use the Left or Right arrow keys on your keyboard:





Hold down "Alt" (Win) / "Option" (Mac) and use the Left and Right arrow keys to adjust tracking by 20 em.


To quickly adjust tracking by 100 em, highlight the lines you want to adjust, hold down Ctrl+Alt (Win) / Command+Option(Mac) and use the Left or Right arrow keys:





Hold down "Ctrl+Alt" (Win) / "Command+Option" (Mac) and use the Left and Right arrow keys to adjust tracking by 100 em.


  • Quickly Adjust Kerning (Space Between Two Letters)

To quickly adjust kerning (the space between two letters) by 20 em, simply click your mouse between the two letters you want to adjust (no need to highlight them), hold down Alt (Win) / Option (Mac) and use the Left or Right arrow keys on your keyboard:



Click between two letters, hold down "Alt" (Win) / "Option" (Mac) and use the Left and Right arrow keys to adjust kerning by 20 em.

To quickly adjust kerning by 100 em, click your mouse between the two letters you want to adjust, hold down Ctrl+Alt (Win) / Command+Option (Mac) and use the Left or Right arrow keys:




Click between two letters, hold down "Ctrl+Alt" (Win) / "Command+Option" (Mac) and use the Left and Right arrow keys to adjust kerning by 100 em.


  • Left-Justify Text


To quickly left-justify your text, simply click anywhere inside of it and press Ctrl+Shift+L (Win) / Command+Shift+L(Mac):




Press "Ctrl+Shift+L" (Win) / "Command+Shift+L" (Mac) to left-justify text.


  • Center-Align Text


To quickly center-align your text, click anywhere inside of it and press Ctrl+Shift+C (Win) / Command+Shift+C (Mac):




Press "Ctrl+Shift+C" (Win) / "Command+Shift+C" (Mac) to center-align text.


  • Right-Justify Text


To quickly right-justify your text, click anywhere inside of it and press Ctrl+Shift+R (Win) / Command+Shift+R
(Mac):





Press "Ctrl+Shift+R" (Win) / "Command+Shift+R" (Mac) to right-justify text.


Preview Your Text With Different Fonts
To easily preview what your text would look like with different fonts, with the Type layer selected in the Layers palette, simply click on the font selection option in the Options Bar at the top of the screen, then use your Up or Down arrow keys to have your text switch between fonts:
